CSS Second Grade Newsletter 4

We had a very busy week! We had three assemblies and we took a walking field trip to lower Mt. Tabor Park with Teacher Ashley’s third grade class on Tuesday.  The students filled their pockets with chestnuts to bring back to class. They reminded me of little squirrels storing away food for the winter. It was nice be outdoors and see how the leaves are starting to change colors as summer comes to an end.

DATES AND INFORMATION

PE: Thursdays and Fridays (Don’t forget your tennis shoes)
Library: Tuesdays
CDS: Wednesdays

IMPORTANT NEWS

There will be no school on October 7th and 8th.

SHARING

The students share on Fridays. Each group is given an opportunity to share if it is their week. The students are put into four different groups. This week was Deserts week to share. Next week will be Antarctica’s week. They will share on Wednesday since we do not have school on Thursday or Friday.

THEME/SCIENCE

We are continuing with our habitat theme and are focusing on the Desert, the Forest, Antarctica, and the Ocean. Using pastels and outlining in black marker we made underwater scenes of the ocean. We brainstormed and wrote down what we have learned about the ocean and the desert. We will be receiving our terrariums on the 11th.

WRITING

Students will continue working on the planning stages of writing and writing in their writer’s notebook. We will focus on punctuation and capitalization. Right now I encourage students to “inventive spell” or sound out words as best as they can. I want students to work on getting their ideas down now and worry about correct spelling later.

READING

We started our guided reading groups, our independent reading (with comprehension building activities), silent reading, shared reading, and read-alouds.

MATH

I will be doing some end of the unit assessments as we end our first math unit on Mathematical Thinking and move onto Coins, Coupons, and Combinations.

If you were unable to come for Open House I will leave the sign-ups for fall conferences at the desk by my door. I will leave some papers for you to pick up by the door also.

Please feel free to contact me with questions and concerns. A good time to reach me is at school between 7:30-7:50 or 2:20-4:00 ish at 503-916-6336 or e-mail me at btmiller73@yahoo.com

Have a great weekend!
