CSS Second Grade Newsletter (6)

Well, I wanted to start on our terrariums this week but I still had not received the soil. After waiting a whole week for soil, my husband decided to just bring some in. So, I am happy to report that we can now begin building our terrariums.  If you would like to come in next week between 12:00 and 1:00 to help out with the terrariums, let me know.

IMPORTANT NEWS

We will be going on a field trip to the fire and police station downtown on November 10th. We will be going by bus and traveling with the second graders from the neighborhood program. We will also be going on a field trip to Franz Bakery in December. Please fill out the attached form. Both trips should be a lot of fun!

PICTURE DAY

School pictures will be taken on Friday, October 22. Picture packets should be sent out some time next week.

THEME / SCIENCE

We have been studying the different types of forests and the students wrote about the rainforests and the reasons why we need to save our rainforests.

WRITING

Students will continue working on the planning stages of writing and writing in their writer’s notebook. We are starting to write stories that have to do with our theme. Students are learning to edit their papers.

READING

We started our guided reading groups, our independent reading (with comprehension building activities), silent reading, shared reading, and read-alouds.

MATH

The students have been discussing and working on strategies for adding “strings” of numbers. They use doubles (3+3, 4+4) and combinations of 10 (3+7, 4+6) to solve other addition problems.

MATHEMATICAL EMPHASIS

• Developing strategies for adding two or more numbers
• Communicating about mathematical thinking through written and spoken language
